Solid Wood Tables

Solid wood tables banner

Solid wood tables are made from natural timber and include dining, coffee, side and console tables in a range of shapes and sizes. Start by considering where the table will be used, how much surface space you need and whether the wood type, finish and maintenance requirements suit your everyday routine.

Why choose a solid wood table?

A solid wood table is a practical choice when you want a sturdy piece of furniture with a natural surface that can withstand regular use. Unlike wood-like materials, real timber has visible grain, knots and colour variations, so every table has a slightly different appearance. It is also generally heavier than tables made from MDF or particle board, which improves stability but can make the furniture harder to move. With proper care, solid wood can remain functional for many years, and minor surface marks are often easier to treat than damage to a thin veneer.

Which wood type works best for daily use?

The right wood depends on how intensively the table will be used and the appearance you prefer. Acacia and mango wood are dense, durable choices that work well for frequently used dining and living room tables, while pine is lighter and often has a softer, more pronounced grain. Rubberwood offers a smooth, even finish and is suitable for many everyday interiors. Regardless of the species, check whether the surface is lacquered, oiled, or waxed, as the finish affects resistance to moisture, stains, and scratches, as well as the amount of maintenance required.

How do you choose the right size and shape?

Choose the dimensions according to the available floor space and the way you plan to use the table. For dining tables, allow approximately 75–90 cm between the tabletop and nearby walls or furniture so chairs can be pulled out and people can move behind them. Round and square tables can fit well in compact or evenly proportioned rooms, while rectangular and oval designs make efficient use of longer spaces and usually accommodate more people. An extendable solid wood table is useful when extra seating is needed occasionally, but a larger tabletop would take up too much room every day.

How many people should the table seat?

The seating capacity should match your regular household needs rather than only occasional gatherings. A small table for two works well in a compact kitchen or dining corner, while a four-seater suits many everyday dining areas. Tables for six or eight people need considerably more room, not only for the tabletop but also for the chairs and circulation space around them. Check the position of the legs or central base before buying, as these can affect how many chairs fit comfortably, even when the stated table length appears sufficient.

How should solid wood be maintained?

Solid wood is durable, but it should be protected from standing water, direct heat and prolonged exposure to strong sunlight. Wipe spills promptly with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners that may damage the finish. Use coasters, placemats and heat-resistant mats beneath hot dishes to reduce marks, and follow the product instructions if the surface requires occasional oiling or waxing. Because timber naturally reacts to changes in temperature and humidity, small movements, fine cracks, or variations in the grain may occur and are not necessarily signs of poor quality.
